Thai food is not necessarily dangerous for children. However, most kids are not equipped to handle the heat. Quite a few Thai dishes are famous for their spiciness. Even some adults can’t make their way through certain dishes without downing a few glasses of water while their eyes water.

If you are planning a trip to Thailand, it’s best for you to familiarise yourself with the dishes that have subtle tastes so that your kids can enjoy a bit of the local cuisine as well. Here are five Thai food dishes that are sure to be kid-friendly:

Fried Rice

Thai fried rice, known to the locals as Khao Pad, is one of the go-to dishes among Thai people. Fried rice is perfect for kids who shy away at the sight of lots of veggies on their plate. When you order fried rice, you will be able to ask for your own choice of meat. If your kid isn’t a fan of certain meats, you can easily opt for something else. Most restaurants offer chicken, beef, or seafood fried rice. It is also possible to make the dish completely vegetarian by opting for tofu or egg instead. You can be sure that this dish won’t be spicy because it doesn’t involve any chillis at all.

Pad Thai

If you’re familiar with the basics of Thai cuisine, you’ve probably heard about Pad Thai. This dish is popular among foreigners since it has an umami flavour without too much spice. Most of the time, this dish is made with a very mildly spicy flavour. However, you can opt out the chilli completely. Just make the request to the waiter or the chef yourself. This dish consists of noodles, sauces, and seafood. Keep in mind that it contains crushed peanuts. If your kid has a nut allergy, make sure that you ask them to skip the peanuts in the dish.

Fried Chicken With Sticky Rice

Don’t expect this dish to be anything like KFC. This is a local version of fried chicken. The flour isn’t as crispy and there is more chicken meat. The food is prepared in a simple way without too many extra spices. Every restaurant or food stall has its own chicken marinade recipe, which means that flavour may vary very slightly. That being said, the majority of them will taste more or less the same. When you order fried chicken, do not forget to order a packet of sticky rice to eat along with it. If you have never tried the combination, you will be pleasantly surprised at how the flavours go together perfectly. You won’t have to worry about letting your kid go hungry. The sticky rice will surely fill their growling stomach. Keep in mind that there might be bones hidden in the chicken and warn your kid to watch out for them.

Mango Sticky Rice

This is a Thai dessert popular all over the world. It consists of sticky rice with creamy coconut milk and sweet mango cut into pieces. If your kid doesn’t have a sweet tooth, they might not be much of a fan. The idea of sticky rice and mango can seem strange at first, but it doesn’t hurt to give it a try. Chances are that you will find it to be one of the tastiest desserts you’ve ever had!

Chicken Satay

Chicken Satay is an amazing appetizer or snack to enjoy in Thailand. The meat is cooked and served on skewers. The chicken is marinated in Satay sauce and grilled until it is done. You can find this dish in most local markets and restaurants. It usually comes with peanut sauce that you can dip the meat into as well as a mixture of cucumber, onion, chilli, and vinegar to add some complexity to the taste. If you aren’t a fan of the sauce, you can opt out. Once again, make sure that your kid does not dip their skewers in the peanut sauce if they have allergies.
